Boy covie - crusaders

Covies is a popular group for boys aged 9-14 years that meets every Friday from 6pm at the church.

The Boy Covies are affiliated to Youth for Christ and Urban Saints. The aim of the group is to set before the boys the basics of the Christian faith, and in particular introduce them to Jesus Christ as a personal friend and saviour in whom they can depend in a world of uncertainty and insecurity.

Friday Nights

The Friday evening activity time is aimed at creating a Christian environment and building relationships with the boys through a variety of games and activities such as bouncy castle, football, pool, craft, table tennis to name a few. Numerous trips are also arranged including Laser Quest, swimming, ten-pin bowling and ice-skating. In the Summer we also play rounders and other summer sports on the Tewkesbury C of E school field, as well as trips including go karting and to Battle Sports.

A sense of belonging is important and so we encourage membership and regular attendance. To become a full subscribing member of the group, subs would need to be paid at the beginning of each school term. Alternatively, you can pay a weekly sub of £1.00, but you would not get all the benefits of a subscribing member. A tuck shop is also available offering a wide range of confectionery.

Residential trips

We have an annual camp on the Gower in Wales each year. This year's camp was a great time. The day starts with a teaching time followed by a variety of activities took place including walks to the beach, rounders, It's a Knockout, team games, a Krypton Challenge and Wii Challenge. Some braved the sea as well as dune jumping. Each evening we got together for a time of praise and worship and to look at the fundamentals of what we believe.

We also get involved in National and Regional activities including 'Supurbs' in Birmingham and the Spree weekend at the Rock Centre in Northampton.

Football

As many of the boys are involved in local youth football we now only have monthly coaching and game sessions on the astro turf at Tewkesbury School. We also enter summer tournaments with varying degrees of success. For the past two years we undertook a football tour to compete in the ESF Football Tournament at Butlins at Minehead.

Sponsored Children

JosephThe group sponsor 10 year old Joseph who is profoundly deaf and is cared for through Village of Hope and Grace in Tanzania  and 10 year old William who lives in Kampala, Uganda.

The boys contribute out of their own money to support William and Joseph who are in greater need than themselves. It is often “small change”, but it makes a big difference for William and Joseph.

Here is a short video clip of Joseph taken in July 2014 during a Village of Hope and Grace UK team visit. You will see he is quite a character!

Summer Holidays

Numerous camps are available particularly through Youth for Christ and Urban Saints.  Boys link with the girls going to Soul Survivor, and this year a new opportunity at Trac in Newent is also on offer.

A Youth Group with a Difference

Finally, this is a youth group with a difference. We offer the youth of today safe alternatives to the street. Some may say that "Church is boring", but hopefully this brief description of our activities will demonstrate that this, a Church based group, is far from boring.

If you are interested in becoming a member of Covies, please contact us via the contact page or direct to David Hobbs on 01684 295014.
